Fun, Simple, Quick Valentine’s Day Craft – Tile Plaque

Bible Verse Proverbs 18:24Welcome back to The Hard Hat Belles way to DIY (do it yourself) and LIY (learn it yourself).  Do it, learn it and laugh!!

If this is your first visit, you are in for a treat! Please grab your favorite cup-of-stuff, sit back, kick your feet up and enjoy.Tea for twoI love Valentine’s Day – don’t you? Although I think each day should be Valtentine’s Day.  Seriously, it shouldn’t take just one day a year for us to acknowledge or love on our loved ones whether it is a husband, boyfriend, friend, kid, mom or dad. We should do it everyday that we have with them.

I think I am especially sensitive to this since I lost my husband a little over a year ago.  I wished I could have hugged him more and told him more how much I loved him…..how special he was to me.  We didn’t spend 32 years together just because we had to; it was because we cared and loved one another.  We were partners. Not mine or yours, but ours as that old Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda movie went. Life is tough enough when we go it alone, but in this business of living together and raising a family as one unit their needs to be a partnership as God intended.

Okay – I am going to rant a bit if you want to put your hands over your ears right now. I don’t understand some of today’s generation. This mine or yours stuff….never ours?  You know what I am talking about – it usually revolves around money –  separate checking and saving accounts. Or you each have YOUR own bills to pay – separately. Or buying groceries separately with YOUR own money.  I am not saying all relationships are that way, but I have run into this mind set within my own family, friends and contacts.  It’s crazy if you ask me.  God created us to be dependent on each other. Can you just picture Adam telling Eve – That’s not your rib, it’s mine and I want it back?  Or it’s your fault I ate the apple so you deal with this problem – it’s not mine! Or Eve telling Adam since he ate the dang apple he can suffer all those ridiculous labor pains! Hilarouious, isn’t it. It shouldn’t be your money or my money – it should be our money regardless of who is making it and paying the bills.  It is those tough times as well as the good times that build the relationship into a lasting memorable one. Those battles that are unique to “our” relationship. If we are not partners and we start with a “mine” or “yours” how can we make things work out for the best “together?”

Just a quick unpaid for plug – The Dave Ramsey Financial Plan is awesome.  Wiebke and I both went through the program with our husbands at different times and it really made a difference in how we each looked at finances and our spouses.

Anyway, enough about my thoughts and onto some really fun crafting time.  These Valentine Tile Plaques are super easy to do alone, with a friend, your child or grandchildren. Wiebke and I had a blast!  Check us out HERE.

Do you like Pinterest and Google?  Sometimes, we come across ideas on Facebook that one of our friends will have posted and we just have to give it a try.

Peonie, Wiebke and I LLLOOOVVVEEE to check out Pinterest or Google when we are looking for ideas or ways to do something differently and then of course we put our own unique spin on it.  The Valentine’s Day Tile Craft is one such idea.  We checked out a few different Pinterest and Google ideas and put our own unique spin on it.  We hope you love it as much as we do.Peonie Barbie Wannabee and PlaquesThe instructions for the Tile Craft are listed below, but first we did find a few things we tried that did and didn’t work out (failed).

  • We tried the rolling pin idea that someone else posted to roll out the bubbles the paper makes…..complete fail as it tore the paper while it was wet with Mod Podge.
  • We really liked using the hot glue gun to put the buttons on as it dried really quickly and we could build on the design.  I just recently used a “cool” glue gun at my son, Jason’s house for a craft with my grandkids and I think that is my new favorite thing to use.  I was forever burning my fingers with the hot glue gun as I was always in a hurry for instant results.
  • For faster drying results a fan on the project will definitely cut down on your drying time.  Can you tell I like things done quickly?

Now on to the actual crafting (rubbing my hands together).

ITEMS YOU WILL NEEDValentine's Day Tile Craft Supplies

Ceramic tile – the size is up to you.

Scrapbooking papers – use your imagination (tissue paper, gift wrap, construction etc).

ModPodge – you can purchase it or search Pinterest/Google for homemade.

Bling/Ribbons/Lace – This is where you can get really creative (buttons, beads, various ribbons, gems, small fabric flowers etc).

Sponge brush (we found that this leaves less streaking on craft projects).

Hot or Cool Glue Gun (you can also use tacky glue or white school glue – it just takes longer for drying period).

Scissors (you can use a variety of different cutting styles and tearing techniques).

Acrylic Spray Sealer (optional).

Please use caution when using the hot glue gun, scissors and acrylic spary sealer. Please see disclaimer here.

  • Cut one sheet of scrapbook paper(s) to the size of the tile. You can use different sizes of paper to create a unique design as well. You can be creative and use special scissors or even tear it.
  • Cover the whole tile with Mod podge, using a sponge brush. Place the paper on top of the tile.  Press out all the bubbles as best as you can.
  • Cover the scrapbook paper(s) with another layer of Mod Podge and let it dry for about 30 minutes.
  • ŒAttach ButtonsUse a hot glue gun (or your choice adhesive) to attach buttons, lace, bling etc. to the tile.
  • If you want to add a sealer, you can use an acrylic spray sealer to finish off the tile, however that is optional as the Mod Podge seals very well on it’s own.

Easy Steps to Organizing Your Cupboards or Kitchen Cabinets

Organized Cupboards Verse1

Hi Y’all!

We are just so excited here at The Hard Hat Belles to be rolling out our third blog and YouTube video.  Thanks to all our subscribers for signing up and keeping us here and going.   If you haven’t already subscribed, please do so.  This allows us to give you a heads up when we post new videos and blogs to the internet.

This particular episode of Organizing Cupboards is near and dear to Wiebke and me.  When we decided to do this YouTube/Blog thing we were in the middle of organizing Wiebke’s kitchen cupboards.  It was then that we decided “why not.”  We felt strongly that we had something of value to share with others and decided to do something about it. Seriously, who doesn’t like to laugh and have fun while learning?  We certainly did and do.  Go grab your coffee or tea and come join us, we’re glad you’re here!

Tea for two

OUR VERY, VERY, VERY BEGINNING

You might ask, “How did Wiebke and Denine get to be such good friends?”  Well, you see, our friendship really hasn’t been a long one, but it has developed into a strong friendship through our many crazy schemes.

Seriously, we had been friendly acquaintances through our church, The North Branch Wesleyan Church, for several years.  You know those people you see every Sunday and say “hi” to without actually getting to really know them.  You care for them, but you just don’t have time to develop a real friendship even when you want to.

After a long battle with aggressive prostate cancer, my husband, Bill, went home to our Lord in September 2014.  I didn’t know it at the time, but Wiebke had kept me and my family in her prayers during our hard times.  When Bill passed away, Wiebke felt very strongly about the bible verse (James 1:27) that speaks about tending to the widows.  She felt God wanted her to be with me. You see, she had experienced a similar loss in her early twenties that also left her a widow and she had just lost her mom the year before Bill.  So she knew from experience how hard it was going to be for me and wanted to be there for me.  I tried to tell her thank you, but no and at that time if I would have known different languages – I would have said “no” in those as well. I’ll let you in on a little secret ……. that woman can be persistent as all get out and boy am I grateful to God that she was.

During the first couple months after my husband passed away I was very grateful for her help, but even more important than that an amazing thing occurred – a wonderful friendship blossomed.  As our relationship grew closer together we experienced a lot of healing tears, but there was also laughter (oh, was there) while we each were trying to figure life out.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ORGANIZING CUPBOARD EPISODE

Org Cpb barbie tea1

In the beginning – Yes, in our beginning, not God’s; it was my turn to be over at Wiebke’s house and she was complaining that she was so disgusted with her lid, bowl, and whatnot cupboard (seriously, whatever she could shove in her cupboard) and her pan, skillet and baking cupboard.  She was so frustrated she just blurted out, “I can’t take this anymore DDDenine.  It’s disgusting and I’m tired of not finding what I am looking for.”  Then she pointed to her kitchen table where a few items she picked up were stacked and said, “These are the racks I got at Walmart and the Salvation Army… And I already had this dish rack I dug out.  Can we please do this today?”

Messy to Clean Cabinets

So that is what we did.  We tore into the job of organizing her cupboards and in the process we had a lot of fun and laughs at what we found and what we did. At one point while we were busy organizing and working I remember lying on the floor in a fit of giggles thinking that we really need to share this with others. It was then that we both felt God leading us on a path to becoming The Hard Hat Belles.

WHAT YOU NEED

There really is no rhyme or reason for what you can use to organize your cupboards with.  What worked for Wiebke didn’t work for me as our cupboards are different shapes and sizes.  However, to start – you can search your own home and look at your own items differently.

A CD rack or dish rack can become a plastic lid holder or small pan lid holder.org cpb pp rack pic (5)1

A wired magazine/file holder can become a cookie sheet organizer.

Different sized baskets can become utensil holders or used for larger items like soup ladles, frying spatulas or wooden spoons.

org cpb pp rack pic (2)1Empty coffee cans or jars can be used to gather smaller lids or put utensils in.

The key is to use your imagination and think outside of the box on how you can use different items in different ways.  Look at a potential item and brainstorm over what it could possibly become for you.  For example take a wired or plastic dish rack – it can become a lid organizer, or hold pan lids of various sizes, or keep your plates in an upright position in your cupboard.  Keep going until you find what works for you.

Some of the places you might also consider when looking for organizing items (remember think outside of the box) are Salvation Army or Goodwill stores, thrift stores, resale shops, Dollar stores, Walmart, Meijers, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, Ace Hardware, Aco Hardware, local hardware’s (they can have some really neat items), the list can go on and on, but you get the idea.

And remember Pinterest is Wire Racksalso a great go-to place to get several ideas on organizing your cupboards.

We recommend that you wait to organize your cupboards until you get your organizers together.  Once you are ready you will need to unload your cupboard completely.  Then put in the newly purposed organizers and get started.  We found that it took us a few times of putting things in and taking them out before we were happy with the outcome.

Once we completed Wiebke’s cupboards she was so happy.  She still raves six months later about how much easier it is to find things now that the cupboards are organized.  Even her family puts things where they belong now.

Super Easy Greek Yogurt in a Crock Pot or Slow Cooker

Greek Yogurt Verse Psalm 128:2

Hi Y’all!

Come join us, we are so glad you are here! We are simply blessed that you decided to spend a few of your precious minutes with us today at The Hard Hat Belles.  Grab that cup of tea, coffee or whatever you enjoy and sit your sweet self down for another episode of what we have been up to.

Tea for two

Today we are going to make some super easy homemade Greek Yogurt that only takes three ingredients and would you believe we are going to make it in a CROCK POT – you heard me right – a crock pot! Wiebke calls it a crock pot, but personally I prefer slow cooker – don’t you?

It seems that every morning Wiebke and I  get together (and she still does) she has this wonderful big bowl of Greek Yogurt for breakfast.  I began to wonder if she knew there were other breakfast choices out there.  Seriously, for 99.9% of the time she has this every – single –morning!

Eating Greek Yogurt

So one day I decided I couldn’t take it anymore and asked her WHY? Why does she eat this every morning?  Isn’t it boring?  Being the good friend she is she told me her story.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN WIEBKE LAND

Once upon a time a long time ago in Wiebkeland, Wiebke visited her family doctor for a regular appointment. She was told that her cholesterol was getting a little too high and she really did not like hearing that news.  So she clapped her hands over her ears (or she would have liked to if it would have solved her high cholesterol so easily).

Wiebke knew right then and there that she needed to make some changes in her lifestyle and fast. So she got on her white steed White Steedand rode in the direction she knew would lead her to taking charge of her life.

She proceeded to investigate on how she could get her cholesterol under control and an idea came to her.Light bulb

She needed to make some changes in her diet and exercise. Diet and Exercise

Although the exercise was fairly easy to get started she ran into some problems with the diet part.

Wellllllll, the change in diet was a little rough to keep to as she simply could not find anything that would sustain her throughout the morning. She would end up hungry Stomachand we all know where that story ends (listening to your stomach and eating the wrong things).

Finally, after trying many foods she found that the Greek Yogurt would satisfy her hunger and keep her from being hungry all morning.  However, Greek Yogurt, the really good healthy and yummy kind was quite expensive for her frugal little heart to come to terms with. So she got back onto her white steed White Steedand rode to save her day once again.

She did some more research and found a recipe that is made with only three ingredients, yes three.  This Greek yogurt had  turned out amazing in flavor, was very easy to make and made her frugal little heart happy (happy dance).

Now we come to the happily ever after part of the story where we decided that she just could not keep this recipe to herself any longer and that we really needed to share it with our followers.

THE END (not really)

GREEK YOGURT WIEBKE STYLE

 YOU WILL NEED

GY ingredients

** IMPORTANT: You need to use glass or plastic items otherwise it will interfere with the “yoguing” process.

Step 1: Pour the milk into the crock pot and add one cup of dry milk. (The dry milk helps to make the yogurt thicker and creamier). Stir using only a plastic utensil as metal may interfere with the bacterial growth.

Step 2: Cover the mixture and then turn on the crock pot to a high setting for about 4-6 hours.  Get that thermometer and insert it into the crock pot to check the temperature. We want the temperature to reach about 180 degrees to make sure all the unwanted beasties are killed, otherwise the yogurt might spoil.

Step 3: Make sure to turn off the crock pot. The milk mixture has to cool off to around 115 degrees. Wiebke likes to use a fan to blow on the crock pot to cool it down quicker – which will only take the milk mixture about 45 minutes then. Remember check that temperature and make sure it comes down to around 115 degrees.

Step 4: Once the milk mixture has cooled to around 115 degrees you will need to remove the skin that formed off of it. You will be able to see it floating on top of the milk mixture, just skim it off.

Step 5: Add 1 cup of Greek yogurt to a glass bowl and ladle some of the milk mixture into the bowl with the yogurt to temper the yogurt (this slowly gets the Greek yogurt used to the warmer milk mixture).

Step 6: Pour the yogurt mix into the milk mixture that is left in the crock pot and give it a good stir.

Step 7: Cover the crock pot with the yogurt mixture with aluminum foil and stick it into a preheated 100 degree (or the warm setting) oven. Wiebke leaves her Greek yogurt in the oven overnight. This allows plenty of time for the Greek yogurt to yogue and become tarter and thicker.

Step 8: When you pull the Greek yogurt out of the oven and lift the aluminum foil it will look runny. Greek Yogurt WheyWhen you drain the extra whey this makes the yogurt extra creamy and not as runny.  You will need to place a plastic colander (in a plastic bowl large enough to hold the yogurt and allow the whey to drip off) and place a cotton or linen towel over the colander.  Greek Yogurt in colander in bowlCarefully scoop the Greek yogurt mixture onto the towel.  Cover the yogurt and then place the bowl into the refrigerator while the whey drains off.  This will take 1-2 hours.Put Greek Yogurt into refrigerator

Step 9: Once the whey is drained off, place the Greek yogurt into a covered glass bowl and leave in the refrigerator until cold and enjoy!

5 EASY STEPS TO CLEANING A CEILING FAN

Ceiling Fan VerseHi Y’all!

Welcome to The Hard Hat Belles way to DIY (do it yourself) and LIY (learn it yourself).  Do it, learn it and laugh!!

We are just so happy that you have stopped by. Grab your coffee or tea and please sit a bit and visit.

Tea for twoWhen we first decided to roll out a video channel as well as a blog,   we thought we would start with an easy show.  Our fantastic fan cleaning episode. Well let me tell you – what we thought would be easy – was not.

Wiebke was the one who came up with idea of cleaning a ceiling fan with a pillow case (I seriously think my fan blades made her crazy), which you can view on YouTube  here or at the bottom of this blog.

I don’t know how it happens, but my ceiling fans just gather dust like spots on a Holstein dairy cow….even though I live on a paved road, my driveway is dirt and I am surrounded by farm land and it is a constant battle to keep the ceiling fans clean.  Now Wiebke’s ceiling fans are always pretty clean.  I don’t know how she does it as she DOES live on a dirt road. Nevertheless,   I cannot say enough about cleaning the fan blades this way except WHY didn’t I know about this sooner.

Cleaning the fan with a pillow case was a piece of cake, but we had to repeat it several times until we finally got into the swing of filming.  So much to learn; script writing, equipment, timing, audio, and filming just amazed us.  We were excited and scared spitless at the same time.  Trust me when I say we are not natural actors (although Wiebke is actually pretty good), but Wiebke and I are really good at having fun with whatever we do.   Come join us, we’re glad you’re here!

This method is super easy and can be done at any time.  All you need is a ceiling fan, a pillow case (I use a dark one which I keep for just that job), gloves (to keep your hands clean – I don’t bother myself as my hands are washable), a pair of goggles (for loose dust) and a step ladder.  I really wished I had known about this several years ago.  My husband was a fan fanatic.  He was always hot and we had one in every room.  Now no more clearing the table or bed before or after cleaning the fan.  It makes me want to do it more often too because now it is not an involved chore.  Five minutes per fan tops!!

HERE ARE FIVE SIMPLE STEPS TO CLEAN YOUR CEILING FAN

  1. Make sure the fan is off as you never know what or who may be hanging around.Peonie's Fan Ride

2.  Supplies Needed: Goggles, pillow case, gloves and you made need a step stool or ladder to reach your ceiling fan. Please use caution when climbing either item. Please see disclaimer here.

4.  Press both sides of the pillowcase to the fan blade and drag the pillowcase towards you.

VeeBee’s Easy Way to Make New Year’s Resolutions and Keep Them

Happy New Year

VEEBEE’S THOUGHTS ON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

I haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions in a long time. In actual fact things changed in my making of New Year’s resolutions after my son Sidney was born. BC (before child), my life was a breeze. I had it together. I was organized to the tee. I had endless energy to make long to-do lists – and to actually do ALL the things on these lists. Then in 2004, I just gave up. I had learned in the short 6 months of Sidney’s life that I had no control and in actual fact was out of control…

BACK IN CONTROL

Eleven years have passed since then, and I think I’m ready to yet again make some New Year’s resolutions! I have found my new groove with The Hard Hat Belles and feel I owe it to myself and everyone reading this, to make a fresh start and try once more to not only make these vows, but actually work at keeping them. Now you might ask yourself “What has changed?” or “Why now?”. The answer is that I’ve become more realistic and have learned to let go of my pride now and again. I have learned that it is okay to fail and it is alright to have to make adjustments in order to reach my goals.

So, here I am typing up these thoughts and contemplating what I need to do and how I’ll actually keep track of what I’ve done. Instead of giving away my specific New Year’s resolutions, I will try to give you some pointers on how you can go about dealing with this New Year’s Pledge Monster – that is if you are planning to tame one yourself!

TAMING THE NEW YEAR’S PLEDGE MONSTER

  1. Write down your specific resImportant to Journal/Trackolutions. Actually picking up a pen and putting it onto paper is a very powerful way of committing to something you would like to accomplish.

2.  Find a friend or mentor to whom you can be accountable to. It helps to tell someone about your plans. That person can pray for you and support you.

3.  Brainstorm for these areas of life: Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual.                                                                                                      Mental, Spiritual, Emotional, and Physical Examples4.  Be realistic with your goals. If you have unrealistic expectations, you will set yourself up for failure and disappointment.

Realistic and Unrealistic Goals

5. Use your calendar to help you plan. Either writing goals onto your calendar or entering it onto a calendar app on your smart phone or I-phone will remind you daily of what you would like to accomplish. You can also sync all you calendars onto one central calendar.

2016 Calendar

EQUIPPED AND READY

Now that you have the tools, all you need to do is apply these to accomplish your New Year’s resolutions! I dare you to train your New Year’s Pledge Dragon. Achieving what you set out to do, will not only make you feel better about who you are, but ultimately it will bring glory to God, for what you’ve done with what He has entrusted you with.

Psalm 51:10-12 (NIV)

Blessings for 2016!
