Episode 3: SmartPhone Icons & Buttons

Hi Y’All,

Thanks for stopping in and joining us for our Conquer Your SmartPhone 101 Course.  If you haven’t noticed by now, I am not a natural in front of the camera. . . and teaching in front of it makes my wig itch (picture below).  Grab a chair and your drink and get ready for a few chuckles.

Why Create the Conquer Your SmartPhone Series?

CSP 3
My Itchy Wig Syndrome

I really have empathy for those who have a difficult time learning new technology, seriously.  And technology changes so fast that it is next to impossible to stay up with it and if you add in those people who have a learning curve issue, like my wonderful mother, it could become frustrating.

I am pretty savvy at learning new things – I think because I enjoy learning,  but I get so frustrated when I just learn how to operate teh technology and “they” decide to upgrade, update, or make a new improved model, don’t you?  And I don’t know about you, but it drives me crazy when I cannot find the exact words in my brain dictionary to explain myself to others when asking for help! I can’t decide if it makes me laugh more or frustrates me more when I can’t locate those words. . . hmmm. . . .  maybe those are the menopausal moments.

When I have to learn new technology even when it is exciting – it also frustrates me.  My brain kind a feels like a character from the Disney/Pixar movie Inside Out click here  where all my little emotions are going haywire. I can just picture it, Mrs. Frustration just fluttering around in my brain going in circles yelling “I got this, no I don’t, yes I do, no I don’t” as she is twisting and turning the item around punching buttons …lol.

To see what I am talking about check out the trailer above or click here.

Don’t get me wrong, Wiebke and I both love technology, but- TECHNOLOGY sometimes makes me feel like just laying on the floor and having a fit like a two year old having a tantrum.  But, as luck would have it, I’d probably break something or at the very least sprain something {sigh}.  I am certainly glad that all that commotion in my head doesn’t show on the outside only on the inside {I’d scare and confuse myself, let alone anyone else}.

What Learning, Frustration, & Packing My Mother in a Box Have In Common

CSP3 Peonie and SmartPhones

I am sure that the poor victims of new technology frustrations {especially my sweet mother}, will be glad to have The Hard Hat Belles How To Conquer Your SmartPhone series available as they will be able to access it as many times as they need to without having to drive their loved ones crazy with, ” the phone icon just disappeared again and it is not a smartphone, but a stupid one.” or “I can’t find the phone icon {camera, message box etc}, again”.

Seriously, how many times can you lose an icon before you figure out what you did?  I also have had my mother take notes.  But it really doesn’t help if she keeps on losing the book the notes are in.  Unbelievably, my technology challenged mother had this 8″ x 6″ hot pink, furry note book that she put some notes in. . . . And yes, she lost that as well {sigh}.

Either I had to give up trying to bring my mom into the twentieth century or I needed to package her and the SmartPhone into a box and ship them both to the SmartPhone company and ask them to upgrade or improve her as well.  I am so glad that my mother loves me and puts up with me.  She’s definitely a keeper.

Thus, we created the How To Conquer Your SmartPhone 101 series to help others and keep us sane {which might be hard to do, come to think about it}.

How To Conquer Your SmartPhone 101 Episode 2

Episode 2: SmartPhone Controls

Hi Y’all!

We are glad you are here at The Hard Hat Belles website.  We have been busy filming future videos including more episodes on How To Conquer Your SmartPhone.  We have been combining the filming with teaching some of our more challenged friends (Joyce) and family (Pat) how to conquer their smart phones.  Let’s get started and see how well it went; grab your cup and your seat and we’ll get with  today’s topic – Conquer Your Smart Phone 101 Episode 2 (or II).

Tea for twoPhones Back In The Good Ole Days

I am really not that old, (at least I don’t think so), rotary dial phonebut in the last several years telephones have really come a long way.  I can remember rotary phones and when you dialed the phone they made these strange musical noises and then when the dialer would come back to it’s original position, it made another musical noise.  The next telephone I remembered was a push button phone.  You not only used them for communication, but people were also creating tunes Push button phone that ranged from Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to the Three Blind Mice and more.  Their notes were a little more musical and keyboard style; like a piano. Then there were the party lines.  Households within a community shared phone lines and only one family or household could use it at a time.  I remember hearing my parents talk about having to wait (sometimes complaining about the long winded talkers),  until others were done using the phone line in order to place their calls.  You knew someone was on the party line when you picked up your phone and you’d hear a conversation and you’d hear a conversation like this, “. . . and Mary Lou was late to class because she was caught holding hands with George . . . ,”  (just kidding).  But can you imagine the privacy issues back then.   Hmmmm. . . . . . do you think a lot of gossip went on during that time?

History Buffs

If you would like to learn a little more fun history facts about cell phones or just the telephone in general I recommend visiting             The Art Institute’s website or  The FCC Kids Zone or BGR Media, LLC, which shows a brief timeline of the house to cell phone history along with some pictures (for those too young to have experienced the earlier models).

The Here & Now

And here we are – back into the here and now where we are currently using these super small phones (compared to the older ones). You can get a cell phone that is just for talking or one that can do everything your computer at home does.  There appears to be a variety of styles and types to chose from.

Conquering The SmartPhone

We are truly blessed to be living in a time where we can have affordable cell phones that we can take with us when traveling long distances to provide a way to contact others in case we break down or if there is an emergency on the road, which could possibly save lives.

Unfortunately,  for those who do not understand how to operate the cell phone, SmartPhone, or IPhone it can be very frustrating, especially as new and improved models are rolled out on a regular basis.

Fun, Simple, Quick Valentine’s Day Craft – Tile Plaque

Bible Verse Proverbs 18:24Welcome back to The Hard Hat Belles way to DIY (do it yourself) and LIY (learn it yourself).  Do it, learn it and laugh!!

If this is your first visit, you are in for a treat! Please grab your favorite cup-of-stuff, sit back, kick your feet up and enjoy.Tea for twoI love Valentine’s Day – don’t you? Although I think each day should be Valtentine’s Day.  Seriously, it shouldn’t take just one day a year for us to acknowledge or love on our loved ones whether it is a husband, boyfriend, friend, kid, mom or dad. We should do it everyday that we have with them.

I think I am especially sensitive to this since I lost my husband a little over a year ago.  I wished I could have hugged him more and told him more how much I loved him…..how special he was to me.  We didn’t spend 32 years together just because we had to; it was because we cared and loved one another.  We were partners. Not mine or yours, but ours as that old Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda movie went. Life is tough enough when we go it alone, but in this business of living together and raising a family as one unit their needs to be a partnership as God intended.

Okay – I am going to rant a bit if you want to put your hands over your ears right now. I don’t understand some of today’s generation. This mine or yours stuff….never ours?  You know what I am talking about – it usually revolves around money –  separate checking and saving accounts. Or you each have YOUR own bills to pay – separately. Or buying groceries separately with YOUR own money.  I am not saying all relationships are that way, but I have run into this mind set within my own family, friends and contacts.  It’s crazy if you ask me.  God created us to be dependent on each other. Can you just picture Adam telling Eve – That’s not your rib, it’s mine and I want it back?  Or it’s your fault I ate the apple so you deal with this problem – it’s not mine! Or Eve telling Adam since he ate the dang apple he can suffer all those ridiculous labor pains! Hilarouious, isn’t it. It shouldn’t be your money or my money – it should be our money regardless of who is making it and paying the bills.  It is those tough times as well as the good times that build the relationship into a lasting memorable one. Those battles that are unique to “our” relationship. If we are not partners and we start with a “mine” or “yours” how can we make things work out for the best “together?”

Just a quick unpaid for plug – The Dave Ramsey Financial Plan is awesome.  Wiebke and I both went through the program with our husbands at different times and it really made a difference in how we each looked at finances and our spouses.

Anyway, enough about my thoughts and onto some really fun crafting time.  These Valentine Tile Plaques are super easy to do alone, with a friend, your child or grandchildren. Wiebke and I had a blast!  Check us out HERE.

Do you like Pinterest and Google?  Sometimes, we come across ideas on Facebook that one of our friends will have posted and we just have to give it a try.

Peonie, Wiebke and I LLLOOOVVVEEE to check out Pinterest or Google when we are looking for ideas or ways to do something differently and then of course we put our own unique spin on it.  The Valentine’s Day Tile Craft is one such idea.  We checked out a few different Pinterest and Google ideas and put our own unique spin on it.  We hope you love it as much as we do.Peonie Barbie Wannabee and PlaquesThe instructions for the Tile Craft are listed below, but first we did find a few things we tried that did and didn’t work out (failed).

  • We tried the rolling pin idea that someone else posted to roll out the bubbles the paper makes…..complete fail as it tore the paper while it was wet with Mod Podge.
  • We really liked using the hot glue gun to put the buttons on as it dried really quickly and we could build on the design.  I just recently used a “cool” glue gun at my son, Jason’s house for a craft with my grandkids and I think that is my new favorite thing to use.  I was forever burning my fingers with the hot glue gun as I was always in a hurry for instant results.
  • For faster drying results a fan on the project will definitely cut down on your drying time.  Can you tell I like things done quickly?

Now on to the actual crafting (rubbing my hands together).

ITEMS YOU WILL NEEDValentine's Day Tile Craft Supplies

Ceramic tile – the size is up to you.

Scrapbooking papers – use your imagination (tissue paper, gift wrap, construction etc).

ModPodge – you can purchase it or search Pinterest/Google for homemade.

Bling/Ribbons/Lace – This is where you can get really creative (buttons, beads, various ribbons, gems, small fabric flowers etc).

Sponge brush (we found that this leaves less streaking on craft projects).

Hot or Cool Glue Gun (you can also use tacky glue or white school glue – it just takes longer for drying period).

Scissors (you can use a variety of different cutting styles and tearing techniques).

Acrylic Spray Sealer (optional).

Please use caution when using the hot glue gun, scissors and acrylic spary sealer. Please see disclaimer here.

  • Cut one sheet of scrapbook paper(s) to the size of the tile. You can use different sizes of paper to create a unique design as well. You can be creative and use special scissors or even tear it.
  • Cover the whole tile with Mod podge, using a sponge brush. Place the paper on top of the tile.  Press out all the bubbles as best as you can.
  • Cover the scrapbook paper(s) with another layer of Mod Podge and let it dry for about 30 minutes.
  • ŒAttach ButtonsUse a hot glue gun (or your choice adhesive) to attach buttons, lace, bling etc. to the tile.
  • If you want to add a sealer, you can use an acrylic spray sealer to finish off the tile, however that is optional as the Mod Podge seals very well on it’s own.
